Welcome to Nancy's Game On Cancer fundraising page!
The fight against cancer is a very personal one for me. Cancer has taken too many of my family and friends from me and affected others who are dear to me. I lost both my parents to cancer. My father, Ross, died at 66 after an almost 7-year battle against prostate cancer, my mother, Billie, died at 71 from a short battle with lung cancer. I've also lost 2 former sister-in- laws to cancer as well as my cousin's wife who was a dear friend. I also have an aunt & uncle as well as several close friends and coworkers who have battled this disease. Then last year, it turned its attention to me.
In March 2017 I was diagnosed with Ductal Carcinoma In-Situ (DCIS), which is considered the earliest form of breast cancer. Thankfully the radiologist reading my annual mammogram saw and recognized some small white flecks known as microcalcifications in my images. They called me back for a better look, then my doctor referred me for a biopsy. Two months after my first mammogram I was told the news, DCIS. A month later I had surgery, and by mid-May I had completed radiation. While DCIS is a non-invasive cancer, I will be on medication to reduce the chance of recurrence for the next 3½ years. I am proof that early detection saves lives.
I am excited to be the Team Captain for the Giffels Webster Birmingham Office Team, working to raise funds to fight this disease and support those who are battling it.
